A casino pit manager and three junket workers have been detained for using a pack of apparently tampered-with cards in a baccarat game and managed to cheat a VIP room out of HK$24 million in just 30 minutes of gambling.
The Judiciary Police (PJ) held a special press conference on Monday during which PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said that the four are all local residents.
According to Ho, the foursome consists of a pit manager surnamed Ao, aged 38, and three junket workers: a 39-year-old surnamed Wong, a 39-year-old surnamed Ng, and a 34-year-old also surnamed Wong.
Ho did not say whether the two Wongs are related.
Ho said that the police received a report from a casino in Zape that one of its pit managers may have conspired with three others to gamble with a pack of apparently tampered-with cards to cheat a VIP room.
Ho said that Wong placed bets of HK$1 million on each hand of baccarat – and after 30 minutes he had won HK$24.39 million. Ho pointed out there were other people in the private room where they were taking notes on the game.
Ho said that initial investigations showed the other people there engaged in parallel betting, which is illegal.
Ho said that the four suspects were unco-operative during questioning and that the police were still trying to recover the money the suspects cheated the VIP room of out, and to find out how the cards were tampered with.
