The new Consul General of Portugal in Macao, Alexandre Leitão, visited the Quinta da Marmeleira winery on the outskirts of the Portuguese capital, an investment by Wu Zhiwei, a leading entrepreneur from Macao.

Leitão, who is replacing Paulo Cunha Alves in the top diplomatic post in the city, was welcomed last week at Marmeleira winery by top level staff.

Leitão inspected the vines, wine storage facilities and tasted the wines produced by Wu Zhiwei’s team, which are sold at leading restaurants and hotels in Macao and China. During the visit, the diplomat highlighted Quinta da Marmeleira’s role in creating jobs for youth in the region.

Marmeleira is a representative enterprise of Macao’s investment in Portugal in response to the Belt and Road initiative and its wines and have been gaining recognition.

The company has actively expanded its sales channels, and its wines are now sold on China Communications Construction Group’s e-commerce platform, on the Jiaojian cloud business platform and the Nanguangtong e-commerce platform.

Its wines are also promoted by luxury hotels and the company has been featured in CCTV a documentary.

Senior figures from China and Portugal visited Quinta da Marmeleira wines’ stand at the 5th China International Import Expo, last month at the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Shanghai).

During the Consul General’s visit, Wu Zhiwei, president of Marmeleira, said that the company intends to integrate into national strategies such as the Belt and Road initiative and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

“We will build a strong brand in Macao, and help to diversify its economy and promote its brands on the international stage,” Wu said.
