Macau Pass, a local electronic payment service provider, introduced mobile payment technology during a launching ceremony at a Royal Supermarket in Areia Preta on Thursday, according to Macau Post Daily.

The company launched the mobile app “MacauPay” which generates QR codes to be scanned with a point of sale (POS) machine or other devices by the cashier.

Users have to confirm their identity when creating a MacauPay account including scanning their identity card.

Macau Pass is providing the new e-payment option in collaboration with Tai Fung Bank and China Guangfa Bank. Users can link their MacauPay account to their account at either bank, or top up with cash in any Circle K convenience store or Royal Supermarket.

The new application allows users to deposit a maximum of MOP 20,000 into their accounts. According to Macau Pass CEO Zhang Zhihua, there are over 1,000 local stores and organisations which accept the new mobile payment.
