The passenger transport service of the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system, which started operations last Tuesday afternoon, will be suspended from 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday – the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, before the resumption of the service on Saturday, the government-owned operator announced in a statement on Monday.

The short statement merely said that the operator will take the measure “in coordination with the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government’s special security measures”.

President Xi Jinping will visit Macau from Wednesday to Friday, Xinhua has reported.

According to Xinhua, Xi will attend a gathering marking the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), will also be present at the inauguration ceremony of the fifth-term government of the Macau Special Administrative Region. Xi will also inspect the MSAR, Xinhua has said.

According to a registration notice for the media to cover events in relation to the 20th anniversary of the MSAR, a central government delegation will arrive in Macau tomorrow afternoon and leave on Friday afternoon.

Normally, the LRT operates from 6:30 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays, and from 6:30 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. from Fridays to Sundays and on public holidays.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the 11 stations of the LRT Taipa section include East Asian Games station near the East Asian Games Dome in Cotai where a dinner banquet and variety show will be held during Xi’s visit.
