The Health Bureau (SSM) launched an organ donation website Thursday, aiming to provide a convenient way for the public to register as organ donors.
During a ceremony at the bureau, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng said in a speech that organ donation not only saves lives, but also helps the families of those who received donated organs. Tam expressed the view that organ donation is an indicator of the harmony and progress of civil society.
Tam signed up as an organ donor and became the first person in Macau to have the organ donation card, with SSM Director Lei Chin Ion being the second.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony, Tam said that it wasn’t the first time he had registered as an organ donor. Tam said that while he was studying in the UK some 30 years ago, he signed up there. He said he believed Macau could learn from advanced countries in Europe in terms of organ donation.
Tam noted that he had told his wife, as well as officials in his office and those under his portfolio about the scheme, with many of them showing an interest.
