Five plots of idle land in Fai Chi Kei and Areia Preta areas will be transformed into leisure spaces, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement on Thursday.
The bureau said it hopes to start work as soon as possible so that the public can enjoy better quality recreational facilities, and that employment opportunities for local workers are created.
According to the statement, four plots of land covering a total area of about 6,220 square metres near Avenida Marginal do Lam Mau in Fai Chi Kei will feature recreation facilities for different age groups with large-size children’s playgrounds and fitness equipment.
According to the statement, the children’s playground will include a roller skating rink, a sandpit and slides, as well as walking paths and multi-purpose squares.
In the fitness area, there will be a basketball court and a sports ground with two areas set aside for basketball shooting drills, as well as fitness equipment for different exercise intensities.
The project will also include the reconstruction of the pavement around the leisure areas, and planting more trees so they can serve as shade from the sun and protection from the rain, the statement said.
As for the plot of land covering 650 square metres next to Areia Preta Urban Park in Avenida Leste do Hipódromo, a standard gateball court with artificial turf will be built in response to residents’ needs for community facilities and improving the quality of life in the area.
The statement said that canopies and seats would be installed around the gateball pitch, and new green facilities would be added to enhance the neighbourhood’s ecological environment.
Gateball is a mallet team sport inspired by croquet. It is a fast-paced, non-contact, highly strategic team game, which can be played by anyone regardless of age or gender.
