The passenger volume in Macau International Airport experienced a gradual post-COVID bounce back during the seven-day Golden Week holiday.

Passengers travelling via Macao’s airport during this year’s Mid-Autumn and National Day holiday rebounded by 66 percent when compared to 2019’s figures for the same period – the airport’s operator, the Macau International Airport Company (CAM), said in a recent statement.

CAM noted that more than 116,300 travellers passed through the airport between 30 September and 6 October – a daily average of about 16,620.

Aircraft traffic, meanwhile, came in at 63 percent of 2019’s volume during the golden week break.

Just over half of passengers flew via mainland China routes, 36 percent of them used Southeast Asian routes, and 13 percent were flying to or from Taiwan, CAM said.

Macau International Airport is working to expand its flight network by Christmas, the statement said. Air Macau is set to start flying direct to Indonesia by the end of October, for example.

Covid-19 restrictions had a significant impact on Macao’s airport, with passenger arrivals decreasing by almost half between 2020 and 2022.
