Population rises to 667,400, continues to ag

Macau’s total population – comprising residents and non-resident workers as well as non-local students – increased by 14,300 year-on-year to 667,400 at the end of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Wednesday.

According to a DSEC statement, females accounted for 53.1 percent of the total.

The proportion of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew by 0.6 percentage points to 11.1 percent.

Macau’s population continued to age, with the ageing ratio rising by 1.1 percentage points to 84.1 percent, representing the 22nd consecutive year of increase.

The local population rose by 1.6 percent to 548,200, some 53.2 percent of them females.

The elderly took up 13.5 percent of the local population, while young people (aged up to 14) accounted for 16.1 percent. The elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 19.2 percent, indicating that about five adults supported one elderly person.

In 2018, a total of 5,925 live births were delivered, down by 604 births. The sex ratio of newborns was 117.2, i.e. 117.2 male babies per 100 female babies.

Non-resident workers totalled 188,480 at the end of last year, up by 9,024 year-on-year.

A total of 3,842 marriage registrations were recorded last year, down by 1.1 percent. The median age at first marriage was 29.2 years for the grooms and 27.6 years for the brides.

The number of divorce cases rose by 65 year-on-year to 1,544, of which divorce by mutual consent took up 94.2 percent.

At the end of last year, the number of households stood at 194,400, up by 2,900 from the previous year-end.(Macaunews)
