The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement last night that it will possibly hoist the No. 8 typhoon signal between tonight and Tuesday morning.
The typhoon drill to be held between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday would imitate a storm surge, and residents in the high-risk flooding areas will be evacuated.
Unitary Police Service (SPU) Commissioner-General Ma Io Kun said Thursday that Macau has improved its capabilities to respond to typhoons and carry out disaster relief measures, based on the lessons learnt from Super Typhoon Hato last year, so that it is now much better prepared for typhoons than in the past.
Raymond Tam Vai Man said that his bureau will amend its system for the issuing of storm surge and tropical cyclone warning signals.
The report says that the weather bureau’s hoisting of typhoon signals simply relied on Fong’s personal judgement and decisions.
The observatory kept the No. 8 storm warning signal hoisted for 11 hours Sunday but Severe Typhoon Khanun spared the city major damage, causing only minor flooding in some low-lying areas in the Inner Harbour area.
The government has gathered 1,264 opinions and suggestions from residents on the improvement of its mechanism for responding to typhoons and other major disasters, the Policy Research Office (GEP) said in a statement Tuesday.
The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast on Sunday that tropical storm Talim which recently formed near Guam will move to Luzon Strait and Taiwan later this week.
