The SAR’s authorities are proposing to take over a small area of land and sea from the Zhuhai authorities to enable the line’s construction.
Macao LRT
Scheduled to open this Friday, the Taipa-Barra extension line will allow residents to travel between Taipa and the Macao Peninsula by rail for the very first time.
Lack of passenger numbers has always dogged Macao’s rail system, hitting a low of less than 2,000 riders per day during the pandemic years.
The line will connect six stations upon its expected completion in 2028, from the Taipa Ferry Terminal up to the Border Gate.
A proposed connection, which would integrate with the LRT, could link Macao to Guangzhou’s international airport, among other destinations.
When completed in 2028, the East Line will be a boon for both inbound and outbound travellers, connecting the Taipa Ferry Terminal to the Border Gate.
Work on the 2.2-kilometre-long section, designed to connect Cotai and Hengqin Island, started in March 2021.
Operation of the 1.6-kilometre line, which connects Seac Pai Van station and a station at the new Islands Healthcare Complex, is expected to begin next year.
Macao Light Rapid Transit Corporation Limited says East Line will have city’s first underwater tunnel that will be operational regardless of the weather conditions.
