Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U has ordered the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) to review its granting of subsidies to local schools for various projects over the past five years, and submit a report to her within three months.
The Judiciary Police (PJ) have arrested a former vice-principal for allegedly cheating the government out of MOP 20 million in subsidies several years ago when she was at the helm of a local school, in suspected collusion with an engineering company, for the installation of new facilities and the launch of new courses at the school, most of which never got off the ground.
Ho Kuai Seng, a member of the Central District Community Service Consultative Council, said on Wednesday he deplored the government’s belated announcement about some of the back-to-school arrangements, adding that it caused parents and pupils unnecessary stress.
The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) said in a statement yesterday that it expects Macao’s schools to have 85,014 pupils when the new school year 2020/21 starts next month, a 2.8 per cent increase from the 82,683 pupils in the previous school year.
A patriotic education base is being set up at the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao and slated to be ready by the end of the year, Tsang Hio Ian, who heads the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau’s (DSEJ) Documentation, Information and Public Relations Centre, said on Thursday.
A number of residents reported to the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) on Saturday that they had received calls or voice messages from people claiming to be DSEJ officials to discuss scholarship matters or conduct surveys.
The DSEJ urged local schools, private tutorial centres and continuing education institutions to remain “highly” vigilant against Covid-19 in the wake of a number cases that have been newly confirmed in Hong Kong schools.
