The Canton Fair kicks off with a sharp rise in overseas buyers

Some 149,000 buyers from dozens of countries have completed pre-registration for the massive trade show, organisers say.

The 135th session of the China Import and Export Fair – popularly called the Canton Fair – has opened in Guangzhou and will run till 5 May.

This year’s Canton Fair features 55 exhibition zones, 74,000 exhibition booths and 29,000 exhibitors, spread over an area of 1.55 million square metres, ECNS reports.

China’s state-run news agency Xinhua says that around 149,000 buyers from 215 countries and regions completed pre-registration for the event, marking a more than 17 percent increase compared to the previous edition.

There was a particular rise in buyers from the United States, Middle Eastern countries, countries participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative participating, and member countries of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Xinhua says.

Some 600 trade promotion activities have been planned for the fair’s duration.

According to the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (known by its Portuguese initials IPIM) a delegation of 18 Macao are participating in the third session of the fair from 1 to 5 May. A 180-square-metre Macao pavilion will also be set up during that time.
