Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) Executive Director Gloria Batalha Ung said that in order to provide better assistance to local enterprises, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular, to develop their business ties with the Portuguese-speaking countries, the institute planned to set up representative offices in Lisbon and Sao Paulo.

Ung also said she expected the offices to be set up in the second or third quarter of next year, and initially the number of staff in each office would be just two or three.

Ung made the announcement on the sidelines of an event to promote business opportunities in Mozambique at the IPIM-run Macau Business Support Centre (MBSC) in Nape.

Talking to reporters, Ung said the fact was that more enterprises from the city and the mainland were showing an interest in developing their businesses in Portugal and Brazil.

She said some of the enterprises interested in doing business in Portuguese-speaking countries may not be very familiar with the situation of those markets.

“IPIM will set up representative offices in Portugal and Brazil…in Lisbon and Sao Paulo,” she said, adding that one of the main functions of the offices was to assist enterprises from Macau or the mainland which decide to set up companies there to contact the right people or companies that can provide them with help.

“We expect the offices to be set up in the second or third quarter of next year…in the beginning each office will be staffed by two or three people,” she said, adding that right now she was unable to give the budget for running each office per year as the finer details had not yet been ironed out.
