Macau exports and imports fall in May

Macau’s exports and imports fell in May, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said on Monday.

Exports fell 5.9 percent year-on-year to just 874 million patacas. Re-exports accounted for 82.2 percent of all exports. Both Re-exports and domestic exports were down.

Imports dropped 4.3 percent to 6.9 billion patacas, resulting in a trade balance deficit of 6.1 billion patacas in May.

Imports of gold jewellery fell 34.7 percent to 563 million patacas. Imports of mobile phones dropped 11 percent to 449 million patacas, while imports of construction materials decreased 17 percent to 240 million patacas. Imports of motorcars and motorcycles dropped 42.3 percent to 221 million patacas.
Imports of food and beverages, the city’s top import item, dipped 3.8 percent to 905 million patacas.

In the first five months, 77 percent of all exports were shipped to Hong Kong and the mainland. Some 45 percent of all imports originated from the mainland and Hong Kong.
