Macau’s number of licensed motor vehicles reached 240,107 at the end of last year, up 5.3 percent from a year earlier, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Monday.

Scooters and motorcycles accounted for 52 percent of the total number of motor vehicles.

The number of new registrations of motor vehicles rose 6.4 percent year-on-year to 20,374.

The police recorded 16,029 traffic accidents last year, 6.3 percent more than in 2013, resulting in 5,424 casualties, 14 of them fatal.

Cross-border vehicle traffic reached 4.9 million vehicle trips last year, a year-on-year growth of 6.1 percent.

Some 79.7 percent of the cross-border vehicle traffic passed through the Barrier Gate checkpoint.
