Wynn Macau is to end its junket relationships by the end of the year, Executive Director Linda Chen has said.
The Chinese-language Macao Daily reported that Chen said that terminating the agreements with third-party VIP gaming promoters was “conducive to the long-term and healthy development of Macao.”
Chen said that the mass market was responsible for three-quarters of its total gaming results in 2021. She said that Wynn would concentrate on developing this segment while the VIP rooms would be turned into what she described as “diversified experience facilities”.
Sands China and Melco Resorts are also reported to be closing their VIP rooms, following the collapse of the Suncity junket group in the wake of the arrest of its founder, Alvin Chau, on charges of money laundering and conducting illicit gambling activity. However, SJM Resorts and Galaxy Entertainment Group are understood to have taken no action to alter their business model as yet.
Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong has indicated that junkets may continue to operate if they “fulfil all legal requirements”.
