Macau’s gaming industry will reopen its doors tonight after its 15-day shutdown by the government as part of the authorities’ fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Macau government announced Monday afternoon that the city’s casinos can reopen for business on Thursday.
Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong said that Macau’s 41 casinos will be closed for 15 days starting from Wednesday onward.
As of Tuesday, 4th of February, these measures have been made by the government of Macau.
Growth of Macau’s gross casino revenue slowed to 12.1% in May, compared to 27.6% in April and 22.2% in March, according to the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
Gambling revenues in Macau surged in January, posting the largest year on year increase in almost four years.
Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in December could reach MOP23.5 billion (US$2.93 billion), rounding out the year for a take of about MOP286.5 billion(US$35.8 billion), according to a report by Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).
The global revenues of the 10 gaming and gambling companies in Macau in 2016 totalled 229.00 billion patacas (US$28.6 billion), a contraction of 1.8% compared to the figure recorded in 2015, the region’s Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said.
Leong said the government hoped that the six gaming operators will submit their proposals to the bureau and the police in a week as to what measures they will take to enhance security in their casinos.
