Construction workers digging from either side beneath Guia Hill have met in the middle, marking a milestone in the innovative pedestrian tunnel project, the Public Works and Transport Bureau has announced.

Work on the MOP 235 million tunnel, which will connect ZAPE and the Avenida de Horta e Costa neighbourhood, started last December.

The entrance to the tunnel from ZAPE will be located near the Caltex petrol station in Avenida do Dr Rodrigo Rodrigues, while access on the other side of the hill will be located in Flora Garden.

Once the tunnel is completed, the walking distance between the two sides will be shortened to about 400 metres from the current 1,100 metres. The tunnel, officially dubbed Walking System Surrounding Guia Hill, is expected to be completed by autumn 2022.

The project includes two footbridges across Avenida do Dr Rodrigo Rodrigues, one from the tunnel’s entrance to Rua de Malaca and the other to near an undeveloped plot between the Jai Alai casino-hotel complex and Casa Real Hotel.

A moving walkway will be installed in the pedestrian tunnel, while lifts will be set up inside connecting to the main walking and running trail on Guia Hill – officially known as Estrada do Engenheiro Trigo.
