Authorities will increase the water tariff for the region later this year.

This comes in response to an uptick in water supply cost in Guangdong Province.

The Marine and Water Bureau is going to impose an updated water tariff on residents in the fourth quarter of this year, with households with less consumption expecting a moderate increase.

The move came after a meeting with Zhuhai’s drinking water supplier earlier, which has decided to increase its water supply charge for the region.

Authorities will disclose more details on the adjustment later this year, based on an established formula that allows for various costs from across the border.

The cost of water supply has risen by 16 per cent from 6.68 patacas per cubic metre in 2013 to 7.75 patacas per cubic metre in 2014, according to the figures provided by the bureau.

Last year, local authorities have subsidised local water consumption with 160 million patacas.

Besides, the construction of the region’s fourth channel to import drinking water from the Guangdong Province is expected to be finished as scheduled next year, after it kicked off in April.

Another construction aimed at guaranteeing steady water supply along the waterway from its origin, is expected to start next year after a year-end public tender.(Macau News / TDM)
