A retired fireman delivered a baby girl when the mother went into labour in Toi San district on Tuesday morning, the Chinese-language newspaper Macao Daily News reported.

According to the report, the retiree surnamed Iu was walking in the neighbourhood and saw a pregnant woman in great pain. Believing that she would be giving birth at any moment he borrowed a chair from a nearby retail shop so that the woman could sit down.

Suddenly the woman began to give birth. Iu delivered the baby girl and held her in her placenta until the ambulance arrived. People from a nearby shop had called the ambulance and gave Iu a clean towel to clean and wrap the newborn in, according to the report.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the baby’s umbilical cord was still attached when the ambulance arrived at the scene, the report said. Both the mother and the infant were taken to a local hospital, according to the report.
