The Portuguese government has announced the automatic recognition of the Macau Special Administrative Region’s (MSAR) higher education degrees and diplomas, the Higher Education Bureau (DSES) said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the recognition of higher education degrees and diplomas will not only facilitate cooperation between the two places in the field of higher education, but also raise the international recognition of Macau’s academic qualifications.

The move followed the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Portuguese Republic Conducting the Automatic Recognition of Diplomas and Academic Degrees ” signed by the local and Portuguese governments in May, the statement said.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the recognition of degrees and diplomas will promote mobility and exchanges for students from both places and also promote Macau’s relations with Europe and Portuguese-speaking countries, apart from creating better conditions for students from Macau to obtain the mutual recognition of higher education academic qualifications from other European Union (EU) countries, the statement noted.

According to the statement, the local government is still drafting the administrative regulation on the automatic recognition of Portuguese higher education degrees and diplomas in Macau, which it expects to enter into force later this year.
