The opening of the Macau Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2020 in Venice will be delayed due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has told public broadcaster TDM-Radio Macau.

According to a Radio Macau report on Monday, the delay has been requested by the local government for logistical reasons, considering that most of the production and transport companies involved in Macau’s participation in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia from May 23 to November 29 are still closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

According to the report, Macau will be represented by a team headed by local architect-cum-artist Carlos Marreiros as its curator. Apart from Marreiros, the team includes four young professionals from the construction sector with experience in urban planning: Ho Ting Fong, Che Chi Hong, Ina Lau and Chan Man Na, according to the report.

The Macau Pavilion exhibition will focus on Macau’s future in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), the report said.

The report did not give a timeline for the delay.

Italy has been hit hard by the novel coronavirus outbreak. However, the organisers of La Biennale di Venezia said last week they were nevertheless planning to go ahead with the event as scheduled.
