A newborn Asian boy was discovered inside a zipped blue backpack amid a pile of rubbish in Areia Preta district early Wednesday morning, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said.

Lei announced details of the case during a regular press conference. According to Lei, the baby was found by a street cleaner clearing up a pile of rubbish between Avenida do Dr. Francisco Vieira Machado and Travessa 1º de Maio, near the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), at around 4:45 a.m.

The baby, with his umbilical cord still attached, was taken to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre (CHCSJ) where he was assessed to be in good condition, according to Lei.

Lei said the cleaner, an employee of the Macau Residue System Company, heard some noises coming from the backpack and thus came to the boy’s rescue. The cleaner contacted the police immediately after having discovered the newborn.

The police had not yet taken anybody in for questioning at the time of the press conference, according to Lei.
