Scores of stray dogs lives’ have come under threat as one of Macao’s main animal shelters embarks on a desperate search for new premises.

The Macau Association for Stray Dogs and Animal Welfare (MASDAW) is launching a crowd-funding campaign to raise MOP 1.2 million to relocate to a new shelter by mid-March, as it has to leave its current location in Coloane.

MASDAW noted that the association is “facing the biggest challenge of its history” and called on the local community and businesses for help due to having “no major sources of income from the government or large corporations”.

The association, which is headed by photographer Fátima Galvão, stressed that it “will not survive and the lives of over 130 dogs under its care will be lost” if help is not forthcoming.

The funds will mainly be used to cover renovation work such as drainage and building kennels for a new shelter. The association also needs to raise MOP 1.5 million for its annual expenses.

Donors can contribute to MASDAW via its bank accounts at Bank of China account number 13-01-20-024733 or Banco Nacional Ultramarino account number 9012 686 823. The association also accepts donations through its MPAY QR code. After transferring donations, donors need to send a proof of transfer to [email protected], or to facebook.com/masdawmacau

The association’s volunteers are also selling charity vouchers priced at MOP 300, with MOP 100 available for those under-18s.

Other forms of support include association membership, dog adoption, fostering a dog, donations (food, leads, collars, harnesses), and even volunteer work to help the association (design work, walking dogs, administrative work).

The association noted that business owners and professionals may also display a MASDAW donation box, adding that “event organisers suggest donations at functions or weddings instead of receiving gifts or lai-sees”.
