Macau’s jobless rate falls to 2.6 pct

Macau’s unemployment rate for local residents fell 0.1 percentage point to 2.6 percent in the August-October survey period compared to the July-September period, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Monday.

Macau’s unemployment rate for local residents fell 0.1 percentage point to 2.6 percent in the August-October survey period compared to the July-September period, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Monday.

The city’s overall unemployment rate – comprising local and non-local workers – dropped 0.1 percentage point to 1.9 percent.

Macau’s total labour force stood at 387,200 between August and October when the labour force participation rate amounted to 70.8 percent. Total employment stood at 379,800, while the total number of employed residents amounted to 279,900, down by 1,400 and 1,300 respectively from the previous period.

While employment in the gaming and junket sector was up, hotels, restaurants, wholesale and retail recorded decreases.

The number of unemployed was 7,400 in August-October, down by 300 from the July-September period. Fresh labour force entrants looking for their first job accounted for 14.8 percent of the total number of unemployed.

Year on year, the unemployment rate remained unchanged, while the labour force participation rate dropped 1.5 percent.
