Macao’s primary and secondary pupils seem to have grown keener on their studies, education officials have reported.

The Education and Youth Development Bureau announced yesterday that the school-leaving rate of secondary and primary schools decreased from 6.7 per cent and 2.3 per cent in the 2007/2008 academic year to 1.8 per cent and 1.1 per cent in the 2020/2021 school year.

The dropout rate fell from 0.43 per cent in the 2007/2008 academic year to 0.07 per cent in the 2020/2021 school year.

In recent years, the bureau has continued to conduct its Survey on Dropouts and School Leavers, adding that the survey for the 2021/2022 academic year has been entrusted to WideBox Open Source Technology which began to collect more data yesterday. Data collection is slated to end on 23 December, and is being conducted via telephone interviews, mainly covering the reasons for students dropping out and leaving school, their willingness to return to school and their current situation.

Interviews are conducted from 4 pm to 10 pm, Mondays to Fridays and from 1 pm to 10 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The information collected will be only for statistical and research purposes, and all personal information will be treated confidentially, The Macau Post Daily reported.
