The Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) held an online opening ceremony for the academic year 2022/2023 on Tuesday, welcoming over 1,600 new students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes, with the students coming from areas such as Macao, the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs).

The university said that during the ceremony, deans from MPU’s affiliated faculties and academies welcomed the new students, and held orientation activities to introduce the programmes and study arrangements.

MPU Rector Professor Im Sio Kei urged freshmen to set goals, work hard and broaden their horizons. He also encouraged students to have “the whole world in view and undertake the role of pioneers of the time to make contributions” to Macao’s development, as well as building a “community with a shared future for humanity”.

Professor Im also noted that MPU has a diversified talent-cultivation system at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, with most of its degree programmes having obtained accreditation reviews or professional certifications from internationally recognised authoritative organisations.

Professor Im encouraged students’ active participation in scientific research and competitions, citing awards such as MPU Computer Applied Technology PhD students winning the Best Student Paper Award for their research on Covid-19 prediction at an international conference, and Information Science and Technology students winning the highest prize in Macao and the second prize in the global final in the Huawei ICT Competition, The Macau Post Daily reported.
