The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) has collected 800 kilogrammes of dead fish in the Patane North Bay since Sunday, according to a joint statement by the bureau and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) Tuesday.

Patane North Bay – a bay off Fai Chi Kei and Ilha Verde – is known as Fai Chi Kei North Bay in Chinese.

The statement said that the Marine and Water Bureau had recently found scores of dead fish floating in the bay, after which it dispatched vessels and workers to the scene to gather the dead fish, in order to keep the area clean.

The statement said there were still some dead fish in the bay yesterday morning, adding that the gathering of dead fish would continue for some time.

The data from the water quality monitoring station in the bay showed that the amount of dissolved oxygen present in the water has consistently been at a low level in recent days, the statement said, adding that the death of fish in the bay was possibly due to the low level of dissolved oxygen.

The Environmental Protection Bureau has collected water samples for further tests, the statement said.

The statement urged residents not to pick up the dead fish for consumption, in order to avoid possible health issues.
