Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) is giving its staff members a one-off “special payment” equivalent to one month’s salary on 10 February, the gaming operator said in a statement on Wednesday.

Chinese New Year (CNY) falls on 12 February.

The statement said the payment would be awarded to eligible staff at “senior manager” level and below, covering around 98 per cent of the gaming operator’s employees, to thank them for “their commitment to the company’s plans for 2021 and beyond”.

GEG Vice Chairman Francis Lui Yiu Tung said that the company was “vigorously developing one of the largest and most diverse integrated destinations in the world in support of Macao’s development into a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”.

Lui said that the company’s expansion from 2021 and beyond would create many opportunities for employees.

“Delivering this will have its challenges and difficulties at times, but working hard as a team and differentiating ourselves will be rewarding,” Lui said.

The statement also pointed out that 2020 was a year full of challenges, and that the company would like to thank the government for its leadership in “achieving excellent outcomes of containing the [novel corona]virus and steering Macao through the pandemic”.

“Covid-19 brings unprecedented challenges to GEG’s business and although the near-term outlook is still full of uncertainties, the company’s determination to achieve continuous growth and development during such difficult times remains unwavering,” the statement said, adding that the company hopes to have its staff members’ full collaboration and support concerning its Cotai Phases 3 and 4 projects, which would assist the company in maintaining competitiveness for the long term.
