Authorities have recorded another suicide in Macao after the owner of a food supply company hung himself at the loading dock of a gaming resort in Cotai on Saturday.

Earlier this year, Health Bureau officials warned that the city’s suicide rate was “significantly high” after 28 cases were reported in the first quarter, a year-on-year increase of 18.

The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced that the deceased is a 69-year-old local man surnamed Lam.

The PJ received a report from the Fire Services Bureau at 4:15 pm on Saturday about the case, which occurred at the loading dock of a gaming resort in Avenida Cidade Nova.

At around 4 pm on Saturday, the PJ said, a stewarding attendant went to the loading area to work where he found that Lam had hung himself with a rope. He immediately called the emergency services.

The attendant told PJ officers that the man was the owner of a company supplying food to the gaming resort.

At around 11 am that day, according to the PJ, gaming resort staff saw Lam delivering food there, when he “did not show any signs of abnormalities”.

The PJ also said that nobody had seen Lam quarrelling with anyone before.

PJ officers saw marks on Lam’s neck, and confirmed that the marks matched the rope that he had used to hang himself.

An initial examination of the body by PJ officers showed that Lam had no injuries that could have been caused by foul play, nor were any signs of a struggle found at the scene. No suicide note was found at the scene.

A post-mortem examination will be performed shortly, The Macau Post Daily reported.
