The public concession contract with Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau (CTM) will be extended until the end of 2023, Macau Post and Telecommunication (CTT) Director Lau Wai Meng has announced, adding that a third party had been tasked with conducting analysis and research work.

Lau made the remarks during the Beyond Expo at the Venetian in Cotai.

However, Lau said that the concession contract could be shortened or terminated 60 days prior to 31 December 2023.

When asked whether 5G licensing or amendments to the framework law on the telecom sector would come up first, Lau also said that it would depend on the third party’s analysis report.

The amendments would have to be submitted to the legislature for debate and vote in order to take effect.

Asked about the adjustments included in the contract between CTM and CTT, CTM CEO Vandy Poon Fuk replied that CTM supports the government’s arrangements, adding that in the next two years, his company hopes to cooperate with the government and work on policies together.

Poon also said that as soon as 5G is established, the development of the local telecom sector as a part of the smart city concept would be improved, The Macau Post Daily reported.
