Construction has finally been completed on two complexes set to become international schools in Coloane.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U said that a number of organisations have submitted applications to run international schools on the site, and that the government was still assessing the applications.

The two buildings are on Plot 12a officially earmarked for social facilities, which is located next to the private residential estate One Oasis, near the Seac Pai Van public housing estate.

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng told lawmakers in April that Macao would have two new international schools “in the near future”.

Speaking at the weekend, Ao Ieong said that government officials and engineers will soon carry out survey inspections and finalise the formal acceptance of the two new buildings, after which they will be transferred to the Education and Youth Development Bureau.

Ao Ieong said that the government was assessing which organisations that have submitted applications are suitable to run international schools. She said that the two new schools will come into use after the bureau has signed agreements with the winners.

Meanwhile, Ao Ieong also revealed that the future “school village” to be constructed in the Zone A land reclamation area will have eight schools and a youth activity centre.

Zone A is primarily being developed for public housing projects, with only a few plots earmarked for private residential projects. Several public housing projects are currently being built there, The Macau Post Daily reported.
