Last year was the hottest year on record in Macau, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) has announced.

In a statement on Friday, the bureau said that three main indicators – Macau’s average temperature, the average highest temperature, and the average lowest temperature – all hit record highs last year since the local observatory was established in 1952.

According to the statement, Macau’s average temperature last year was 23.6 degrees Celsius, replacing the previous record in 2015 when the bureau recorded the average temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius.

The statement also noted that last year’s average temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius was one degree above the average temperature of 22.6 degrees Celsius between 1981 and 2010.

Last year’s average highest temperature in Macau was 26.8 degrees Celsius, replacing the previous record in 1959 when the figure was 26.6 degree Celsius, according to the statement.

Last year’s average lowest temperature was 21.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record stood at 21.1 degrees Celsius in 2015.

The average highest/lowest temperature in a year is the average of the highest/lowest temperature recorded on each day in that year.

In addition to the three indicators, the number of days of cold weather also hit a record low of only 12 days last year, replacing the previous record in 2017 when the bureau recorded 24 days of cold weather.

According to the statement, a particular day is regarded as a cold weather day if the lowest temperature on that day is 12 degrees Celsius or lower.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the statement noted that on average the bureau recorded 43.1 days of cold weather per year between 1981 and 2010.
