Areia Preta residents can now take advantage of 18 new hi-tech compacting rubbish skips which have replaced 300 conventional dumpsters, which have been in use since 2018.

The Municipal Affairs Bureau pointed out that the underground waste collection system in Areia Preta district, which ceased operations in 2018, served around 53,000 residents from 126 buildings in the district. The bureau noted that since 2018, the city’s waste collection concession, Macao Residue System Company, had provided around 1,100-litre dumpsters to residential buildings.

Every day when a dustcart arrived near a building, workers moved dumpsters from the building’s rubbish chamber to the lorry. The bureau said that with the aim of solving the adverse hygiene issue resulting from this waste collection practice, the bureau has chosen 20 locations, which are near the previous collection points of the now-defunct underground waste collection system, for the setting-up of compacting rubbish skips.

Eighteen compacting rubbish skips are already in place, with two more to come into operation at a later date.

The capacity of a compacting rubbish skip is equivalent to up to 30 conventional 1,100-litre dumpsters.

The bureau also pointed out that there are 124 compacting rubbish skips, and 122 enclosed rubbish chambers, stationed across the city.

Macao’s tally of conventional dumpsters has decreased from a peak of 1,600 to only 104 now, due to their replacement with compacting rubbish skips and enclosed waste chambers, The Macau Post Daily reported.
