Lau Wai Meng, one of the two deputy directors of the Economic Services Bureau (DSE), will be the new president of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), the Portuguese-language radio channel of public broadcaster TDM reported on Thursday.

According to the unsourced report by Radio Macau, Lau Wai Meng will replace Irene Lau Kuan Va at the helm of the institute. Irene Lau was appointed president of IPIM in May last year. She had been acting president of the troubled institute since October 2018 after Jackson Chang, aka Cheong Chou Weng, was removed from his post for his alleged involvement in a corruption case involving the granting of residency permits to purported investors and professionals. Chang, who has been remanded in custody, will stand trial for bribe-taking and a string of other crimes next Thursday, alongside ex-IPIM official Glória Batalha Ung and a number of other co-defendants.

Irene Lau has worked for the institute since 1994. The report did not say why Irene Lau will not continue as IPIM president.
