Ex-policy secretary to head Macau offices in Brussels & Geneva

Former policy secretary for social affairs and culture, Alexis Tam Chon Weng, has been appointed director of the Macau Economic and Trade Office to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva and director of the Macau Economic and Trade Office to the European Union in Brussels.

Macau’s former Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Alexis Tam Chon Weng, has been appointed director of the Macau Economic and Trade Office to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva and director of the Macau Economic and Trade Office to the European Union in Brussels.

Tam’s concurrent appointments were published in the Official Gazette (BO). According to an executive order signed by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, the appointments take effect on May 1 and expire on December 19 this year.

Tam has headed by the Macau Economic and Trade Office in Lisbon since December 20 last year, the day after his term as the government’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture had ended.

Customarily, the director of the Macau Economic and Trade Office in the Portuguese capital also heads Macau’s corresponding offices in Brussels and Geneva.

Macau is a founding member of the WTO in its capacity as a separate customs territory. Macau and the EU are linked by a trade and cooperation agreement that took effect on January 1, 1993.

Tam, a veteran Macau civil servant, was born in Myanmar in 1962. He is a Chinese national.
