Macau, China, 11 May – Macau’s population density hit 18,875 inhabitants per square kilometre at the end of March, according to figures released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) this week.
 
Macau’s population density is understood to be the highest in the world, ahead of Monaco with 15,270 inhabitants per square kilometre. Hong Kong ’s population density stands at 6,452 inhabitants per square kilometre, according to The Macau Post Daily.
 
The total land area of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) stands at 29.5 sq km, according to the latest available official data.
 
Macau’s population at the end of March stood at 556,800,  the second highest on record. Year-on-year, the population was up 2.6 percent. Compared to the end of last year, it had grown by 0.8 percent.
 
The local population peaked at 557,300 in September 2008.  
 
At the end of the first quarter of 2000, the first full quarter since the establishment of the MSAR in December 1999, Macau ’s population amounted to 430,100.
 
The total population figure at the end of March included 81,416 imported workers, an increase of 5,603 from the end of last year.(MacauNews/Politics)
