Macau, China, 31 Jan – Macau’s former chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah has been awarded the Grand Lotus Medal of Honour – the highest decoration granted by the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

Ho, who headed the local government between December 1999 and 2009, received the medal from his successor Fernando Chui Sai On in an awards ceremony held at the Macau Cultural Centre on Friday.

Ho is the 10th person to receive the top medal. Previous recipients include casino mogul Stanley Ho Hung Sun and former Legislative Assembly president Susana Chou.

Edmund Ho is now a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the 11th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Meanwhile, a total of 34 persons and four entities received awards at Friday’s ceremony. Well-known businessman-cum-philanthropist Antonio Ferreira, also known as Wu Shun Him, received the second-highest award, the Golden Lotus Medal of Honour. Wu is the managing director of the Venetian Macau.

Io Hong Meng, president of the Macau General Neighbourhood Unions Association (popularly known as "Kai Fong"), was awarded the third-highest honour, the Silver Lotus Medal of Honour.

Joao Manuel Costa Antunes, the long-time director of the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO), received the Tourism Medal of Merit.
