Heritage Exhibition of a Traditional Pawnshop Business Link copied
The Tak Seng On Pawnshop closed in 1993 and lay vacant for many years before the government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau purchased it in 2000 and restored it.

The restored Tak Seng On Pawnshop gives visitors a glimpse of what life was like at the start of the last century. It also serves as a reminder of how important pawn businesses once were for Macao’s economic growth. Local merchant Kou Ho Ning established the shop in 1917, only a few years after the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. The space reflects this important time period, with its beautifully preserved shop counter, old pawn records and fortress-like storehouse. Closed in 1993 due to a decline in the pawn industry, the shop was restored by Macao’s Cultural Affairs Bureau in 2000. Well worth visiting for a glimpse of life 100 years ago.
