Domestic violence increases 466% year-on-year

According to Director of the Judiciary Police Sit Chong Meng, domestic violence cases increased between June 2018 and the end of May 2019 from 3 to 17.

Domestic violence cases increased between June 2018 and the end of May 2019 from 3 to 17, said Director of the Judiciary Police Sit Chong Meng at the Judiciary Police Award Ceremony on Thursday.

Other cases that have seen increases are assault causing bodily harm, extortion and arson. Theft and homicide cases decreased year-on-year.

Between June of last year to May of this year, 98 cases dealing with injuries among family members were registered, 17 of which were domestic violence. When compared the same period past year, this is an increase of 466 per cent.

Based on statistics presented, there were more assault cases causing bodily harm registered, with the number increasing from 7 in 2017-2018 to 8 in 2018-2019. Extortion increased from 53 to 61 and arson increased from 50 to 58. The cases with the most increases were in money lending, which rose from 489 to 585.

In the same period, homicide decreased from 4 to 3 and associated gaming kidnappings decreased from 389 to 339. Organised crime also showed a decrease.

Drug trafficking cases decreased from 42 to 35. “In general, there has been a decrease in numbers [drug trafficking] in recent years, showing the work that we are doing to counter drugs in Macau is working,” Sit Chong Meng guaranteed.

The Judiciary Police also reported that from January to June 2018, they have found 8 cases of illegal online gaming. In the same period last year, there were only 7 cases found.

During the investigation, they found no clues tying Macau citizens, nor any web servers that are located in Macau.

The Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak was also present at the ceremony.
