Macau gaming operator Melco said in a statement on Saturday that it has donated MOP 3 million (US$375,000) to the Women’s General Association of Macau (widely known by its Cantonese name Fu Luen) for the purchase of facemasks and also as a contribution to an allowance scheme for families impacted by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.

The statement, which did not say when the donation was handed over, added that Melco was also supporting Chinese-language newspaper Macao Daily News’ public health awareness and wellbeing online video series about the viral threat.

According to the statement, the donation handed to Fu Luen aims to help “single mothers and those with children with special needs” in particular.

The statement quoted Melco Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho Yau Lung as saying he believed that together with the local government “and our community partners, we will overcome the virus as an ever-stronger and more united community.”

Melco owns four of Macau’s 41 casinos.
