From dogs to cats, bunnies to guinea pigs, animals make excellent companions. Smart and sensitive, animals can form strong bonds with humans and truly become part of your family. Studies have also shown that having an animal in your home can support emotional wellbeing and reduce stress.
In Macao, animal charities and shelters have rescued a growing number of abandoned or abused animals that are all in need of forever homes.

Keith
Keith has had a tough life so far. His former owner neglected him, often tying him up outside with a nylon string. When someone reported the neglect, the owner surrendered Keith to the IAM and, later, Anima picked him up. Now seven months old, Keith suffers from mild nerve issues caused by an untreated viral infection. While easily manageable, the condition causes him to blink involuntarily and can affect his gait at times. Otherwise healthy, this loving kitten is now at Anima’s Cat Paradise where he has made new friends and is now in search of a permanent home!
Personality: Loves snuggles, warm and playful
Age: 7 months old
Sex: Male
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Health: Vaccinated, microchipped, has mild nerve problems

However, when he came down with tick fever, the Macau Association for Stray Dogs and Animal Welfare (MASDAW) took him to the vet in 2015. They released him once again but recently brought him to the shelter where they discovered that Lion has hypothyroidism and put him on medication to manage his hormone levels and help him gain weight. Now healthy and ready to go, this older dog is on the lookout for a home where he can relax and unwind.

Age: Around 8 or 9 years old
Sex: Male

Ziva
IAM found Ziva in Coloane when she was pregnant, later discovering she also suffered from hip dysplasia and tick fever. After MASDAW took her in, Ziva gave birth to eight puppies. But due to her illness, sadly, five of the puppies died two days after birth. A year later, another pup died due to an autoimmune disease, while the other two have since been adopted.
Ziva hasn’t had it easy, but she is strong, resilient, sweet, calm and loving. These days, she lives a relatively slow-paced life, partly due to ongoing hip pain which makes it hard for her to walk long distances without painkillers. If you love gentle, patient dogs, then Ziva is your girl!
Personality: Sweet, calm and gentle
Age: Around 4 to 5 years old
Sex: Female
Breed: Rottweiler, Boxer and stray mix
Health: Healthy, dewormed; needs daily painkillers for hip dysplasia

Finding a loving, permanent home would be the highlight of her life!

Pennywise
When he was found on Estrada do Repouso in September 2019, five-year-old Pennywise was unable to move. A vet soon realised that Pennywise had pancreatitis, anaemia, a collapsed lung, a fractured and displaced pelvis, and had also dislocated his left front forearm and right hind knee. In short, he was in bad shape.
After two surgeries and multiple vet checkups, Pennywise has gradually recovered at the Anima shelter. He is now healthy and plump, with a personality that will melt your heart. If you’re looking for the perfect companion who loves to be pet, Pennywise is your boy!
