Trade between the Chinese mainland and Macau amounted to 17.59 billion yuan in the first 10 months of the year, up 5.5 per cent year-on-year, Xinhua reported on Thursday.

Economic and trade cooperation between the mainland and Macau has strengthened significantly since Macau’s return to the motherland in 1999, Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Gao Feng said at a regular press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

In 2018, trade between the mainland and Macau reached US$ 3.16 billion, more than quadrupling the level in 1999. Investment from Macau reached US$1.28 billion last year, up more than 300 per cent from 1999.

The mainland and Macau have made substantial progress in liberalizing trade in goods and services as well as facilitating trade and investment since the Mainland and Macao Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) was signed in 2003.

“We will continue to work closely with the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) government to promote Macau’s economic diversity, support Macau in integrating into the nation’s overall development and push for Macau’s long-term prosperity and stability,” Gao said.

According to the Macau Post Daily, Macau returned to the motherland on December 20, 1999 when the MSAR was set up and the first MSAR government took office.
