Macau vehicle imports fall 55 per cent in January – September

Macau’s motor car and motorbike imports fell 55.6 per cent year-on-year to 911 million patacas in the first nine months of the year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Sunday.

Mobile phone imports fell 44.9 per cent to 3.06 billion patacas. Watch imports dropped 31.9 per cent to 3.3 billion patacas. Gold jewellery imports decreased 31.4 per cent to 4.2 billion patacas.

Food and beverage imports shrank by 5.2 per cent to 8.5 billion patacas.

Total imports fell 17.8 per cent to 52.2 billion patacas. Total exports decreased 5.2 per cent to 7.7 billion patacas, resulting in an external merchandise trade deficit to 44.5 billion patacas. Re-exports accounted for 80.8 per cent of all exports.

Hong Kong and mainland China took up 55.6 per cent and 17.3 per cent of all exports respectively. The EU and US accounted for a mere 1.8 per cent and 1.4 per cent of all of Macau’s exports respectively.

Mainland China and Hong Kong together supplied 44.9 per cent of Macau’s imports in the first nine months.
