Sales of watches, clocks and jewellery fell 31 percent to 3.7 billion patacas in the first quarter, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.

Watches, clocks and jewellery accounted for 23 percent of all retail sales –the sector’s biggest segment.

Sales of leather goods dropped 28 percent to 1.59 billion patacas. Sales of goods in department stores dropped 13 percent to 2.47 billion patacas and sales of motor vehicles decreased 13 percent to 870 million patacas.

Total retail sales in the first quarter decreased 5.0 percent quarter-on-quarter and 11 percent year-on-year to 16.4 billion patacas.

Goods in department stores, adults’ clothing and leather goods accounted for 15 percent, 11 percent and 10 percent of all retails sales respectively.

Cosmetics, healthcare products and medicines accounted for 6.0 percent of the total value of retail sales. Motor vehicles and automotive fuel sales accounted for 7.0 percent. Sales of goods in supermarkets also accounted for 7.0 percent of the sector’s total sales.

Communication equipment sales were one of the retail sector’s few growth items – they leapt 56 percent year-on-year to 547 million patacas.
