Macau’s average consumer price index (CPI) for the first nine months rose 6.08 percent year-on-year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Tuesday.

In the third quarter, the index was up 5.94 percent year-on-year.

For the 12 months including last month, the index increased 6.03 percent from the previous period.

Last month, the index was up 5.82 percent year-on-year.

A DSEC statement attributed last month’s CPI growth mainly to higher residential rents and the rising cost of eating out.

The price indices of housing and fuels (+12.15 percent) as well as food and non-alcoholic beverages (+5.46 percent) recorded “notable” increases last month, the statement said.

Residents last month also had to cope with higher tuition fees at the start of the new academic year and higher prices of fresh vegetables, fruit and pork, the statement pointed out.
