Mothers who give birth at Conde de São Januário Hospital are allowed to breastfeed their newborns in the same room again, the Health Bureau (SS) announced.

Last night’s announcement came just a day after the bureau put out a statement clarifying the public hospital’s temporary postnatal care measures that deprived mothers from feeding their babies in the same ward, with the hospital’s postnatal care and gynaecology wards merged to deploy medical resources and increase hospital beds to treat patients with Covid-19.

Health officials said last night that, due to the “easing of the pandemic” in Macao, the pressure of beds at the Conde de São Januário Hospital “has also eased”, paving the way for the hospital’s normal arrangement of mother-baby breastfeeding in the same room to be restored “gradually”.

The bureau pointed out that the postnatal care ward’s inpatient area has been restored to its original location, allowing the postnatal mothers and their newborns to be in the same room during breastfeeding as before.

“The policy goal of promoting breastfeeding and creating a breastfeeding-friendly environment has never changed,” said the bureau, thanking patients and their families for their “understanding, tolerance and cooperation” in light of the “inconvenience caused by the temporary ward management”.
