Macau gaming operator Sands China said in a statement on Wednesday that it is donating MOP 1.65 million (US$206,000) to 33 elderly and rehabilitation centres indicated by the Macau Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) to assist them in taking measures to tackle the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and safeguard the health of their over 3,100 users.

Each of the 33 facilities – both senior citizen homes and rehabilitation centres – will receive 50,000 patacas (US$6,200) to be used for cleaning and sanitising the facilities and purchasing hygiene products for additional preventive measures, the statement said.

The statement quoted Sands China Ltd. President Wilfred Wong Ying-wai as saying, “We are grateful to the Social Welfare Bureau for their efficient coordination, assistance and support, and we hope all in Macau will continue working together to keep the city safe during this trying time, under the guidance of the government’s [novel corona]virus prevention efforts.”

The statement pointed out that the company’s latest donation is part of its pledge to donate MOP 5 million (US$623,000) toward Macau’s COVID-19 relief effort, “and is part of Sands Cares, the global corporate citizenship programme of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.”
