Imports fall 40.1% in March

Macau’s merchandise import fell 40.1 per cent to MOP 4.22 billion (US$532.4 million) in March, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

According to a DSEC statement on Wednesday, imports of mobile phones, gold jewellery and watches declined 78 per cent, 76.6 per cent and 61.3 per cent respectively.

Total merchandise exports declined 9 per cent year-on-year to MOP 1.08 billion. Re-exports accounted for 87.1 per cent of all exports.

Macau’s external merchandise trade deficit stood at MOP 3.14 billion in March.

In the first quarter, total merchandise exports dropped 13.7 per cent to MOP 3.14 billion. Imports declined 22.9 per cent to MOP 16.5 billion.
