Local Portuguese lender Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) has donated another MOP 1.6 million to Tung Sin Tong, the city’s oldest Chinese charitable organisation.

According to a BNU statement released on Thursday, BNU CEO Pedro Cardoso handed the donation cheque to lawmaker-cum-businessman Chui Sai Cheong in the latter’s capacity as president of Tung Sin Tong on Monday.

The donation ceremony was held at the headquarters of Tung Sin Tong, which was established in 1892. The organisation provides free medical services and education for residents in need.

BNU and Tung Sin Tong launched the Tung Sin Tong Visa credit card in 1999 and the Tung Sin Tong Visa Platinum Credit Card in 2012. Cardholders are helping those in need as BNU donates 1 percent of their retail spending to Tung Sin Tong, the statement pointed out.

The statement also said that “thanks to the many supporters of this card, since the inception of this donation scheme, BNU has contributed more than MOP 12.1 million to Tung Sin Tong.” The statement described the arrangement as a “good example of cooperation between the financial sector and a non-profit organisation, for the good and the harmony of Macau’s community”.
